The picture appears to have been painted at 42 Dartmouth Row, Greenwich where Jean Cooke's father lived (Bratby married Cooke in April 1953). The background is similar to that on Jean on Sofa which was painted in Dartmouth Row.
It is unclear in which Young Contemporaries exhibition the picture was shown (either 1953 or 1954) but there is a Recumbent Nude dated to 1953 showing Jean wearing the same loin cloth which would suggest that the present picture was probably also painted in 1953.
The Young Contemporaries show of 1953 was important as it was here that Helen Lessore first saw Bratby's paintings which led to her exhibiting his work at the Beaux Art Gallery.
