Peter Hand · biography

Trained at the Reigate School of Art & Goldsmiths College 1949-54

Early work, mainly commissioned sculpture, wood carvings, stone carvings & work in synthetic resins.  Well known for series of approximately 30 wooden, tubular steel or fibreglass Play Sculptures situated in various shopping malls throughout the UK.

Brief periods of employment as stylist in Ford Motor Company and as Head Modeller at MGM Film Studios and later as Senior Lecturer, Bournemouth & Poole College of Art.

Living in Italy from 1985-1993.

Influenced by my great interest in Jungian psychology, coupled with skills acquired in the motor industry and film studios, I started to evolve my personal style of working during the 1960's.

Although not conforming to everyone's idea of sculpture my pieces are a fusion of sculpted artefacts and figures set in elaborate architectural environments.  Somewhere between sculpture and painting they employ a variety of materials and media, exploiting texture, colour and light.

At small scale and set within glazed cabinets I have found this way of working ideal for the expression of my ideas regarding archetypal images, mythical and narrative themes.
